Using AI to learn in this subject
We actively encourage you to use AI to support your learning in this subject — in two complementary ways.
Our Cogniti agents. This subject takes part in a University of Melbourne pilot of Cogniti, a platform that lets us build purpose-designed teaching agents. Ours are grounded in the actual course material and are set up to help you learn rather than to hand you answers. See The Cogniti agents.
Your own LLM. For many everyday study tasks, your preferred general-purpose model (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, …) is an excellent study partner — and for anything numerical, one that can run code is genuinely better than an agent that cannot. The distinction is simple: the Cogniti agents know the answers and won’t just tell you. That is the point. Your own LLM is there to explain, drill and check; the Cogniti agents are there to get you unstuck without short-circuiting the learning.
Using AI to learn is encouraged; submitting AI-generated work as your own is not. Nothing assessable should be entered into any AI tool unless the assessment explicitly permits it, and the usual academic integrity rules apply throughout. If in doubt, ask.
A practical advantage of the Cogniti agents over a private chatbot: your teachers can see the conversations. That lets us spot where the cohort is getting stuck and adjust our teaching — and it means the agents are a shared resource every student has equal access to, regardless of whether you pay for a subscription.
